Our History

Beacon Hill Academy was established in 2003 by Canadians Rebecca Mears and Matt Baker with the help of Kyle Patmor from USA and several local teachers. Rebecca, Matt, and Kyle had all taught in Sri Lanka previously and saw the need for postsecondary education to be made more accessible to young adults in underprivileged districts like Nuwara Eliya.

Since its inception, Beacon Hill Academy has been able to offer its unique one-year program to students free of charge thanks to generous donations provided by people like you. Now in its tenth year of operations, the school seen over 500 students graduate from its full-time program and hundreds more complete part-time classes.

However, our reach goes far beyond the classroom. By providing a long-term solution to poverty through education, entire families have benefited from what we do. In addition, by engaging our students in service projects on a regular basis, thousands more in the community have been impacted.
