Beacon Hill Academy is a unique institute located in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka. It was established in 2003 in order to make higher education available free-of-charge to young people from all levels of society in the upcountry region.

The school offers a one-year, full-time diploma course starting each January. The program is free and is open to unmarried students aged 18-24 from the Nuwara Eliya and Welimada areas. Application for the 2009 batch will be available on November 1st. Click here for more details.

Applications for 2009

The program is conducted in the English-medium and is taught by both foreign and local teachers. The curriculum combines a quality liberal arts education with practical vocational training. Students study:

  • English grammar and literature
  • Critical thinking and general world knowledge
  • Personal development and ethics
  • Public speaking
  • Business management and office skills
  • Computer literacy

Beacon Hill welcomes students from all religions and ethnic backgrounds and encourages mutual understanding, cooperation and service to the community.

The institute is operated by a local NGO and receives most of its funding from private donors from abroad.
