Welcome

Beacon Hill Academy is a unique institute located in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka. It was established in 2003 in order to make higher education available free-of-charge to young people from all levels of society in the upcountry region.

The school offers a one-year, full-time diploma course starting each January. The program is free and is open to unmarried students aged 18-24 from the Nuwara Eliya and Welimada areas. Applications for the following year are available each October.

The program is conducted in the English-medium and is taught by both foreign and local teachers. The curriculum combines a quality liberal arts education with practical vocational training. Students study:

  • English grammar and literature
  • Critical thinking and general world knowledge
  • Personal development and ethics
  • Public speaking
  • Business management and office skills
  • Computer literacy

Beacon Hill welcomes students from all religions and ethnic backgrounds and encourages mutual understanding, cooperation and service to the community.

The institute is operated by a local NGO and receives most of its funding from private donors from abroad.
